Castle introduced the first dance to jazz accompaniment, danced in a natural style with the feet moving from the heels, the same as normal walking, which they named the foxtrot. Until then, dancers had moved from the toes, but the Castle Walk, which the couple introduced, became the basis of modern ballroom dancing. …

...A dance style developed by African Americans based on African dance. Dances that move the body mainly through hip movements to jazz rhythms have been danced by white people since around 1910, and the foxtrot was invented by the Castles. In the 1920s, the Charleston, with its two-beat rhythm, became popular.
