Also called "Kamijima". An island at the mouth of Ise Bay, northeast of Toba City, Mie Prefecture. It is located about 15 km from Toba Port and 4 km from Cape Irago in Aichi Prefecture, and belongs to Toba City. The highest point is 171 m. There are many reefs in the surrounding area, making it one of the best fishing spots in Ise Bay and a great place for sea fishing. A lot of octopus is landed here. The area between Cape Irago is called the Irago Strait, and the currents are strong, making it a famously difficult place for maritime traffic. It is known as the setting for Yukio Mishima's "The Sound of Waves". It belongs to Ise-Shima National Park. Area: 0.76 km2 . Population: 534 (2000).Kamishima IslandSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
