Kamishima

Japanese: 神島 - かみしま

Also called "Kamijima". An island at the mouth of Ise Bay, northeast of Toba City, Mie Prefecture. It is located about 15 km from Toba Port and 4 km from Cape Irago in Aichi Prefecture, and belongs to Toba City. The highest point is 171 m. There are many reefs in the surrounding area, making it one of the best fishing spots in Ise Bay and a great place for sea fishing. A lot of octopus is landed here. The area between Cape Irago is called the Irago Strait, and the currents are strong, making it a famously difficult place for maritime traffic. It is known as the setting for Yukio Mishima's "The Sound of Waves". It belongs to Ise-Shima National Park. Area: 0.76 ^km2 . Population: 534 (2000).

Kamishima Island

It was an island in the southwest of Okayama Prefecture, part of Kasaoka City, but was connected to the mainland in 1977 due to the reclamation of Kasaoka Bay. There is a chemical fertilizer factory on the south coast, and mandarin oranges are cultivated on the hills. The area is 9.57 ^km2 . The population is 3,297 (1996).

「かみじま」ともいう。三重県鳥羽市北東方，伊勢湾口にある島。鳥羽港から約 15km，愛知県伊良湖岬から 4kmに位置し，鳥羽市に属する。最高点 171m。周辺は暗礁が多く，伊勢湾屈指の好漁場で，海釣りの好適地。タコの水揚げが多い。伊良湖岬との間は伊良湖水道と呼ばれ，潮流が激しく，海上交通の難所として有名。三島由紀夫の『潮騒』の舞台として知られる。伊勢志摩国立公園に属する。面積 0.76km²。人口 534 (2000) 。
