Azuma Ohno - Azuma Ohno

A military commander in the early Nara period. Son of Hatayasu, a military commander on the side of the Omi Imperial Court during the Jinshin War. In 714 (Wado 7), he welcomed the Silla envoys to Kyoto with 170 cavalry. In 724 (Jinki 1), he played an active role in suppressing the rebellion of the Emishi in Mutsu Province, and the following year was awarded the rank of Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Order of the Order of Fourth Class. In 729 (Tenpyo 1), he was the Chinju Shogun, and in 737, as the Mutsu Azechi, he proposed opening a direct route from Taga Castle to Dewa no Saku, mobilizing 5,500 soldiers from both Oshu and Ushu provinces, 1,000 cavalry from the eastern provinces, and over 300 "subjugated barbarians." In 739, he returned to Kyoto and became a councilor. During this time, he was the highest authority in both Oshu and Ushu provinces for over a decade. In 740, during the rebellion of Fujiwara Hirotsugu, Dazai no Shoni, he led 17,000 soldiers from various provinces westward as the most loyal general and put down the unrest. The following year, he was promoted to the rank of Junior Third Rank, and when the capital was moved to Kunikyo (740-744), he was appointed as the governor of Yamato Province and the caretaker of Heijokyo. 奈良前期の武将。壬申(じんしん)の乱の近江(おうみ)朝廷側の武将果安(はたやす)の子。714年(和銅7)騎兵170騎を率いて新羅(しらぎ)使の入京を迎えた。724年(神亀1)陸奥(むつ)国の蝦夷(えみし)の反乱征討に活躍し、翌年従(じゅ)四位下勲四等に叙せられた。729年(天平1)には鎮守将軍であり、737年陸奥按察使(あぜち)として多賀城(たがじょう)より出羽柵(いではのき)への直路開通を建言し、奥羽両国兵5500、東国騎兵1000、「帰服狄俘(てきふ)」300余を動員。739年帰京し参議となる。この間十数年にわたり奥羽両国経営の最高責任者であった。740年大宰少弐(だざいのしょうに)藤原広嗣(ひろつぐ)の乱には持節大将軍として諸道の兵1万7000人を率いて西下し、動乱を平定。翌年従三位(じゅさんみ)に進み、恭仁京(くにきょう)遷都(740~744)にあたり、大養徳(やまと)国守兼平城京留守(るす)の任につく。多賀城碑に「此城神亀元年歳次甲子按察使兼鎮守将軍従四位上勲四等大野朝臣東人之所置也」とみえる。娘仲仟(なかち)(中千、仲智)は藤原永手(ながて)の室(しつ)で、尚侍(ないしのかみ)兼尚蔵(くらのかみ)。
