Mane - Mane (English spelling)

Japanese: たてがみ(鬣) - たてがみ（英語表記）mane

A group of hairs that are clearly longer than the rest of the body and grow mainly on the back of a mammal, from the top of the head to near the shoulders or further back, and often stand upright against the flow of the hair on other parts of the body. Some are limited to the midline of the back of the neck in horses, donkeys, zebras, and giraffes, some extend to the back in the hyena and warthogs, and some spread to the sides and underside of the neck in male lions. Most are found in both sexes, but some are found only in adult males, such as lions, and are secondary sexual characteristics.

哺乳類の頭頂から肩近く，あるいはさらに後ろまで，背すじを中心に生える，他の部分の毛よりはっきりと長い毛の一群で，他の部分の毛流に逆らい直立していることが多い。ウマ，ロバ，シマウマ，キリンのように首の背面正中線付近に限局されるもの，ツチハイエナ，イボイノシシのように背すじまで延びるもの，雄ライオンのように首の側面や下面まで広がっているものなどがある。多くは雄雌に関係なくあるが，ライオンのように雄の成獣にだけあり，二次性徴になっているものもある。
