A type of bamboo or bamboo grass in the Poaceae family (APG classification: Poaceae). Also called Bungozasa. Small, with a culm about 1 meter tall, flattened on one side and semicircular cut. The nodes are extremely high, and each node usually produces five short branches, each with one leaf at its end. The leaves are broad lanceolate, 6-10 cm long and 2-3 cm wide, with dense short hairs on the underside. A notable feature is the lack of a leaf sheath. The name comes from the fact that this bamboo culm was sold as a good luck charm at the Tori-no-ichi festival in Asakusa, Tokyo, with Okame masks hung from it. It is widely cultivated, but its native habitat is unknown.
