A perennial grass of the grass family, native to northern Europe, North Africa, and North Asia. It was imported to Japan in the early Meiji period as pasture grass and cultivated in fields, but quickly became naturalized. It grows to a height of about 40 cm, has a fragrant scent, and has linear, pointed, hairless leaves. The leaf sheaths are long. In early summer, it produces oblong flower spikes from the stem apex, and the spikelets are densely packed. The name Harugaya comes from its English name.
