Suimei Kawai

Poet. Real name Matahei. Born in Kitahatago-cho, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. Aware of poetry and prose at an early age, he started out as a letter writer for "Shonen Bunko" and "Iratsume", and became a reporter for "Bunko" through the encouragement of Takizawa Shugyo and Takase Bunen. He was mainly in charge of the poetry column, nurturing young poets, and published poetry collections such as "Mugenkyu" and "Tokage", and an anthology of poems "Seigaiha". As a central figure in "Bunko", he built its heyday together with Kojima Usui and Chiba Kameo. In 1907 (Meiji 40), he founded the Shisosha Publishing Company and published "Shijin", and thereafter worked on enlightening women poets while working as an editor for Joshi Bundansha and Fujin no Tomosha. In 1930 (Showa 5), ​​he founded Josei Jidai with Shimamoto Hisae, and in 1962, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy. After World War II, he established the Toei Poetry Society and launched the magazine Toei. His poetry began with a new style of poetry rich in lyricism, and he led the way in the development of colloquial free verse, and he continued to pursue poetry throughout his life. In addition to the above, his works include Suimei Shishu, Meiji Representative Poets, Suimei Shiwa, Suimei Essays, and Bunko Shishu (edited and written).

詩人。本名又平。大阪府堺(さかい)市北旅籠(きたはたご)町に生まれる。早くより詩文に目覚め、『少年文庫』『いらつめ』の投書家として出発、滝沢秋暁(しゅうぎょう)、高瀬文淵(ぶんえん)の推輓(すいばん)により『文庫』記者となる。主としてその詩欄を担当して青年詩人を育成しつつ、詩集『無弦弓』『塔影』、詞華集『青海波』などを刊行。『文庫』の中心的存在として小島烏水(うすい)、千葉亀雄らとともに全盛時代を築いた。1907年(明治40)詩草社を結成して『詩人』を刊行、以後、女子文壇社、婦人之友社の編集に携わりつつ女性詩人への啓蒙(けいもう)活動を行う。30年(昭和5)島本久恵と『女性時代』を創刊、37年芸術院会員となった。第二次世界大戦後は塔影詩社をおこして『塔影』を創刊した。その詩作は叙情性豊かな新体詩から始まり口語自由詩の発展に先鞭(せんべん)を与え、生涯、詩を守り続けた。著作は前記のほか『酔茗詩集』『明治代表詩人』『酔茗詩話』『酔茗随筆』、『文庫詩集』(編著)など。
