…The activities of the exile group in New York during World War II and their influence on the United States and Canada, as well as the activities of Hungarian Simon Hantaï (1922- ) and Swedish Max Walter Svanberg (1912- ), who came to Paris after the war, are also important, but what is more important is the penetration of Surrealism into the so-called "Third World". Numerous poets and painters continued to develop Surrealism from Syria and Egypt to former French Africa, Mexico (Paz, etc.), Cuba (Wifredo Lam (1902-82), etc.), Martinique (Césaire, etc.), Peru (Moro, etc.), and Chile (Matta, etc.). In other words, Surrealism, which sought to discover "elsewhere" within European culture, provided an opportunity to encourage self-discovery in these "elsewheres". …
