It refers to the period of Roman rule over Gaul from the late 3rd century BC to the late 5th century AD. [Republican period] During the Second Punic War (218-201 BC), the city-state of Rome gained control over the Mediterranean coastal region, using the loyalty of the Greek colony of Massalia (Marseilles) as a foothold, and then took advantage of the conflict between the Arverni and the Allobroges to expand its control, making the Narbonne region a province in 118 BC. In 105 BC, the advance of the Cimbri and Teutonic tribes into southeastern Gaul destabilized Roman rule over Narbonne, but Marius' victory at Aix, east of Massalia, in 102 BC restored peace to Gaul.
