Caroline Islands - Caroline

Japanese: カロリン[諸島] - カロリン
Caroline Islands - Caroline
Scattered in the western Pacific Ocean between the equator and 11° north latitude and 130°-160° east longitude, it consists of over 900 small islands, including Palau, Yap, Truk Islands, and Pohnpei (Ponape). The indigenous people are mostly Micronesians. They produce taro, yams, bananas, and copra. The Spanish arrived in the 16th century, and the country was later a German colony and a Japanese mandate before becoming a US trust territory in 1947. In 1986, the islands, excluding the Palau Islands (now the Republic of Palau), gained independence as the Federated States of Micronesia. Area: 1,320 km2 . Population: about 130,000 (2005).
