1889‐1951 Leader of a messianic religious movement in the former Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). After receiving his education at the Baptist Church, he worked as a carpenter in Leopoldville (now Kinshasa), but in the spring of 1921, he received a divine revelation and returned to his hometown of Nkamba, where he founded the Kimbangu sect, which combined the indigenous beliefs of the Kongo people with Christianity, and attracted many followers as a prophet and "savior of the black people." Among Kimbangu sect followers, a prophecy was soon circulated that on October 21, 1921, fire would fall from the sky and destroy the white race, and movements against tax payment and forced farming intensified.
