…明治末から大正初期にかけて〈洗濯の便利のため，敷布団の上に白き敷布を被ふべきものとす〉(1912年刊《新式家事教本》ほか)という，合理的で清潔な生活が盛んに提案された。さらに〈被（か）け蒲団にも，洗濯の手数のかゝらぬやうに白布で被いをして，ひどく汚れぬうちに取換へるやうにする〉(1918年刊《新式家事教本》，1925年刊《家事教科書》)などと，敷布は現在の用語の布団カバーにもなって売り出され，第2次大戦期にかけて，都会を中心に敷布と掛布団おおいは普及していった。それらはすべて白い木綿であったが，1940年代ころからアメリカで色物や柄物のシーツが作られ，60年ころから服飾デザイナーの作品もあらわれ，世界各地に広がっていった。…
