An ethnic group that makes up the majority of the population of Cambodia. They have interbred with the Hmong since prehistoric times, and are thought to have been mixed with South Indian colonists from around the 1st or 2nd century, as well as Malay blood. Their language belongs to the Mon-Khmer family. Their physical characteristics are tall, short-headed, black skin, and wavy hair. They live in dwellings on piles, and many of them work in rice paddy farming, but they also do fishing, weaving, and metalworking. Both men and women wear a skirt-like garment called a sampot, which is similar to a sarong. Most of them practice Hindu Buddhism, and marriage is Buddhist-style, and monks have a strong social and cultural influence. Elements of traditional religions can be seen in their belief in spirits and annual events.

カンボジアの人口の大半を占める民族。先史時代からモン族と混血し，これに1～2世紀頃から南インド系植民者が混血したものとみられ，その他マレー人の血も混っているとみられている。言語はモン＝クメール語族に属する。形質的特徴としては，長身，短頭，皮膚は黒色が勝ち，髪は波状である。杭上家屋に住み，水田耕作に従事している者が多いが，漁業や織物，金属細工なども行なっている。服装は男女ともサロンに似たサンポットというスカート様のものをまとう。宗教は大部分が部派仏教を信奉しており，結婚も仏式結婚で，僧侶の社会的，文化的影響力は強いといえる。精霊信仰や年中行事には伝統宗教の要素がみられる。
