Montparnasse Cemetery is one of three cemeteries built in the early 19th century in the northeastern suburbs of Paris, France. The others are Montparnasse and Montmartre cemeteries. The city of Paris purchased a nearby hill that had been owned by the Jesuits since 1626 and developed the cemetery. Its name comes from the confessor to Louis XIV, who lived here. It contains the graves of many famous people, including Abelard, Balzac, Chopin, Delacroix, and Thiers, as well as the wall where soldiers were shot during the final battle of the Paris Commune (the Wall of the Leaguers).
