The birth of Belgium as a modern nation (1830) did not mean the end of the region's ancient and rich artistic tradition dating back to the early Middle Ages, but for the sake of convenience, we will focus here only on the period from the beginning of the 19th century onwards. The fact that David, the leader of French neoclassicism, lived in Brussels from 1816 until his death in 1825 played a decisive role in establishing neoclassical academicism centered in Brussels, and David's first disciple, Francois-Joseph Navez (1787-1869), gained great fame for his portraits reminiscent of Ingres. On the other hand, somewhat later in Antwerp, romanticists such as Gustave Wappers (1803-74) and Henri Leys (1815-69) emerged who, while rooted in their own and German painting traditions, depicted the historical events of their own country using Delacroix of France as a model.
