[Determinants of mental development]
Since ancient times, various studies and debates have been carried out on the question of whether mental development is primarily determined by heredity or environment (or maturation or learning). The main research methods used include the study of wild children who are thought to have grown up isolated from human and cultural environments, the pedigree method, which investigates families that have produced many children with superior or inferior intelligence, the twin method, which compares identical twins with fraternal twins or siblings, and the method of comparing the similarities in intelligence and personality between parents and children. However, the results of studies using these methods were not always consistent.
