Kuroda Incident

Japanese:
Kuroda Incident

In the early Edo period, a family feud occurred in the Fukuoka Domain. After the death of Kuroda Nagamasa in 1623 (Genwa 9), his eldest son Tadayuki became the second lord of the Fukuoka Domain, and his senior vassal Kuriyama Daizen (1591-1652) assisted Tadayuki in accordance with Nagamasa's will. However, Tadayuki distanced himself from Daizen and other old retainers and favored the newcomer Kura Hachijudayu, ignoring Daizen's advice and carrying out actions that provided an excuse for the shogunate to eliminate daimyo, such as the construction of the Ofuna Hoomaru and the establishment of a new foot soldier unit. As a result, the two men gradually came into conflict, and eventually Tadayuki tried to kill Daizen, so in 1632 (Kan'ei 9), Daizen filed a complaint with the shogunate accusing Tadayuki of plotting a rebellion. The following year, the shogunate interrogated Tadayuki and pitted Daizen against the Kuroda clan's senior vassals. As a result, Tadayuki was found not to have plotted treason, and after his estates were confiscated, he was reinstated due to his ancestors' military achievements, Kura Yasodayu was exiled to Mount Koya, and Kuriyama Daizen was entrusted to the Nanbu (Morioka) domain and given a stipend of 1,000 men by the shogunate, and the incident was resolved. It is said that Daizen feared that the Kuroda clan would be wiped out by Tadayuki's mismanagement, and deliberately appealed to the shogunate to prevent this from happening, but the truth is unknown. The story was embellished into a reading material such as the Kan'ei Hakozaki Bunko, and was also performed as a storyteller and kabuki, and became widely known to the public along with the Kaga Disturbance and the Date Disturbance.
