Republic of Karelia (English spelling)

A republic in the northwestern corner of the Russian Federation. From 1940 to 1956 it was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union and was called the Karelian Republic. In June 1956 it was downgraded to the Karelian Autonomous Republic, and in 1990 it was proclaimed a republic. Its area is 172,400 km2 and its population is 792,000 (1989). Of this population, 10% are Karelian, 7% are Belarusian, 2.3% are Finnish, and 74% are Russian. Its capital is Petrozavodsk. It is bounded to the east by the White Sea and Lake Onega, to the southwest by Lake Ladoga, to the north by the Kola Peninsula, and to the west by the highlands that border Finland.

ロシア連邦北西端にあるロシア連邦内の共和国。1940‐56年の間はソ連邦の構成共和国でカレロ･フィンKarelo‐Fin共和国と称していたが，56年6月カレリア自治共和国に格下げされ，90年に共和国を宣言した。面積17万2400km2，人口79万2000(1989)。このうちカレリア人10％，ベラルーシ人7％，フィンランド人2.3％で，ロシア人が74％を占める。首都はペトロザボーツク。東は白海とオネガ湖，南西はラドガ湖で限られ，北はコラ半島に続き，西側は高地によってフィンランドと接している。
