[Died] September 22, 1984. French poet and critic. His real name was Noël Mathieu. He was a Catholic poet who occupied a unique position in the contemporary French poetry world due to his broad perspective and deep insight into the fundamental problems of humanity. He was also an ambitious and prophetic poet who attempted to grasp all the problems facing modern humanity in a holistic and unified way. His poems were written in fixed form. He was a member of the Académie Française in 1968. His major works include the poetry collections Le Tombeau d'Orphée (1941), Babel (52), Le Versant de l'âge (58), La Nouvelle naissance (63), and the critiques Poésie and raison ardente (47).
