Stage director

Japanese:
Stage director

The director is the one who creates and unifies all the work that gives form to the play on stage, and the stage manager is the person in charge of the acting director who puts it on stage. The stage manager's job before the performance is to supervise the various designers such as the set art, lighting, and sound, and to draw up a practical directing plan. He also convenes a staff meeting to ensure that the directing plan is thoroughly understood and refined. The director's work ends with the rehearsal, and from the day of the performance onwards, full responsibility is transferred to the stage manager. Therefore, the stage manager is not simply a subordinate of the director, but has his own authority, and while he supervises the performers and staff, he is also the person in charge of the progress of the performance during the performance. In the Japanese new drama movement, the director was originally called the stage manager, but after the establishment of the Tsukiji Little Theater in 1924 (Taisho 13), the functions of director and stage manager became clearer.
