A town in the canton of Valais in southern Switzerland. A scenic spot located at the back of a valley carved deep into the north side of the Matterhorn (4478m). Altitude 1620m. Almost all residents speak German and are Catholic. 29 of the 38 4000m peaks in the Swiss Alps, including the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa (4634m), and Weisshorn (4505m), are concentrated in the town, making it a great place for mountaineering and winter sports, and it is crowded with tourists all year round. It is the terminus of the railway (about 40km) from Visp, and cable cars and chairlifts connect to the main mountains. Along with Chamonix in France, it is a center of Alpine mountaineering. There is a mountaineering museum. To protect the environment, general automobiles are banned from the city, and horse-drawn carriages and electric cars are operated. Population 3548 (1980).
