Revolutionary Writers and Artists Association

…The signing of the Tripartite Pact between Japan, Germany and Italy, and the founding of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association and the Greater Japan Industrial Patriotic Association took place in 1940, but by this time anti-fascist organizations and speech were almost nonexistent. [Masanobu Suzuki]
[International anti-fascist cultural movement]
The forerunners of the international anti-fascist cultural movement include the Amsterdam Pleyel Movement, which was launched by Romain Rolland and Barbusse with an anti-war slogan, and whose initiators included Gorky, Einstein, Dreiser, and dos Passos, and which gathered 2,200 people from 29 countries at its international anti-war conference in Amsterdam in August 1932, and held a second conference in Paris the following year; the Anti-Fascist United Front, which was initiated by French radical Socialist deputy Bergery and formed in May 1933 with the cooperation of JR Blok and Billdruck; and the anti-fascist movement in 1933 of the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists, which included Gide and Malraux. However, it was not until the February 6, 1934 incident that it became established as a unified movement of intellectuals that transcended political positions.
