Yellow soil

Japanese: 黄色土 - おうしょくど（英語表記）yellow soil

This soil type is found in humid temperate to subtropical regions and is a type of zoned soil. Like red soil, it is named for the color of the B horizon caused by the accumulation of iron oxide, but the number of water molecules hydrated with iron oxide is greater than in red soil, so the red color is lighter. Humus accumulation derived from evergreen broadleaf forests is also observed, and it is said to have a tendency toward podzolization or lateritization, but the genetic position of this soil has not been determined.

温帯から亜熱帯の湿潤地域に分布する土壌型で成帯土壌の一種。赤色土と同様に酸化鉄の集積によるB層の発色に対して名づけられているが，酸化鉄と水和している水の分子数が赤色土より多いので，赤みが淡くなる。常緑広葉樹林に由来する腐植集積もみられ，ポドゾル化作用あるいはラテライト化作用の傾向があるといわれるが，成因論的な位置づけは未確定の土壌である。
