Deep sea fishing

Japanese: 深海漁業 - しんかいぎょぎょう

A general term for deep-sea fisheries. Fishing grounds are 200 meters or more below the continental shelf. Technically, fishing can be done at depths of up to 1,000 meters. Fish such as worms, hoki, red snow crab, and cod are already being supplied using bottom trawls and cages. Many of the fish are not commonly eaten, and the harvesting and fishing requires a lot of manpower and capital. In addition, due to the 200-mile limit issue, it does not account for a large proportion of the industry. However, as marine resources become depleted, it is beginning to attract attention.

深海魚を対象に行う漁業の総称。大陸棚以深 200m以上を漁場とする。技術的には水深 1000mくらいまでの操業が可能。底引網，籠などによりクサカリツボダイ，ホキ，ベニズワイガニ，ソコダラなどがすでに供給されている。食用としてなじみの少い魚類も多く，採取，漁労に人手や資本を多く要し，また 200カイリ問題などの点で産業として大きな比重は占めていない。しかし，水産資源が枯渇するのにつれて注目されはじめている。
