...The Kadamba dynasty was surrounded by the Gupta and Vakataka dynasties to the north, and the Ganga and Pallava dynasties to the south, and its main history was the rivalry with these dynasties. The Kadamba dynasty was at its most stable during the time of the fifth king, Kākutsthavarman, who formed a marriage alliance with the Gupta dynasty and built large irrigation reservoirs. After his death, the country was divided into north and south between his two sons, and the northern elder king's lineage continued with five kings until the mid-6th century, but declined as the power of the Chalukya dynasty expanded to the north.
