…Born in Worms, he received his doctorate from the University of Halle in 1903, and served as professor of chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (1912-26) and the University of Freiburg (1926-51), becoming director of the polymer research institute in 1951. He first made a name for himself with his research on ketenes, and then his research on isoprene led him to develop an interest in the structure of polymers. In 1920, he announced that polymers such as rubber and polystyrene consist of large chain-like molecules, and two years later he named this the "macromolecule." His theory was opposed by supporters of the "association theory," which was dominant at the time, but after some debate, it was accepted by the academic community in the 1930s. …
