Tabātabā'ī (English spelling)

1843 - 1921
Iranian social activist and revolutionary.
Born into a family of mujtahids that had continued for generations. One of the leading constitutionalist ulama in Tehran during the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. Influenced by Mirza Hasan Shirazi and Sheikh Hadi Najomabadi, he advocated the need for an enlightenment movement to revive Islam. He founded the new Islamie Institute and was elected as the Armenian representative to the First National Assembly, held from 1906 to 1908.

代々続いたムジュタヒドの家柄に生まれる。イラン立憲革命期のテヘランの指導的立憲派ウラマーの1人。ミールザー・ハサン・シーラジーやシェイフ・ハーディ・ナジョムアーバーディの影響を受け、イスラム復興のため、啓蒙教化運動の必要性を説いた。新方式のイスラミーエ学院を設立し、1906〜08年開催された第一議会で、アルメニア人代表として選出される。
