Japanese: 日鉄機関方ストライキ - にってつきかんかたストライキ

This was a strike that took place between the end of February and the end of March 1898 by engineers and stokers at the Japanese Railway Company (the largest railway company at the time). It was known as "the first strike that demonstrated to capitalists the efforts of workers in our labor society" (Yokoyama Gennosuke), and what is most noteworthy about it is that, in addition to demands for wage increases, there were also demands for "improvement of status," such as promotion and job title changes. This demonstrates the characteristics of the labor movement in Meiji-era Japan, where workers were discriminated against as members of the "lower class."

1898年2月末～3月末に日本鉄道会社(当時における最大の鉄道会社)の機関方･火夫によって行われた争議。〈我が労働社会にて職工の努力を資本家に示したる嚆矢（こうし）〉(横山源之助)として知られ，なによりも注目されることは，賃金増額要求と並んで身分昇格･職名改称など〈地位向上〉の要求が掲げられていたことである。労働者が〈下層社会〉の一員として差別されていた明治期日本の労働運動の特質がここに示されている。
