1748‐1819 King of Spain. Reigned 1788-1808. Second son of Charles III. Born in Naples, he married Maria Luisa, daughter of the Duke of Parma, in 1765. Lacking the ability to unify the nation during the chaotic French Revolution, he left the affairs of state to his favorites. He especially favored Godoy, said to be the queen's lover, and made him prime minister. Goya's masterpiece, The Family of Charles IV, portrays the king as lacking in individuality. He lost his entire fleet in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, and incurred the wrath of the people by making a secret agreement to allow Napoleon's army to invade the Iberian Peninsula in 1807. In March 1808, he abdicated the throne to Prince Ferdinand (later King Ferdinand VII) in the Aranjuez Rebellion led by Prince Ferdinand.
