Burkhan Khaldun (mountain)

Japanese: ブルハン･ハルドゥン[山]（英語表記）Burkhan Khaldun

This mountain is said to have been revered by the Mongolians, especially Genghis Khan and his descendants. It is said to be located near the source of the Onon and Kerlen rivers, and is densely forested, so it is likely to be a peak in the taiga zone of the Hentei Mountains. It is said that Borte-Chino (Blue Wolf), one of the ancestors of the Mongol tribe, lived here, and that Temujin, who was attacked by the Merkit tribe, fled into this jungle and was saved. At that time, Temujin vowed to hold a festival and pray every morning, and said that his descendants should do the same. There is a theory that Burhan means Buddha, but there is also a theory that it refers to the shamanistic god Purhan.

モンゴル族とくにチンギス･ハーンとその子孫が尊崇したと伝える山。オノン川とケルレン川の源流付近にあって森林が豊かで密林状であるというから，ヘンテイ山脈中のタイガ帯にある一峰であろう。モンゴル部の族祖の一人とされるボルテ･チノ(蒼い狼)が来住したと伝えられ，またメルキト部の攻撃を受けたテムジンがこの密林ににげこんで助かった。このときテムジンは毎朝毎日祭り祈ることを誓い，子孫もそうせよとのべたという。ブルハンは仏の意味だという説があるが，別にシャマニズム上のプルハン神をさすとみる説もある。
