Śāntarakṣita (English spelling)
[raw]?
[Died] A monk from Nalanda, India, who established the first Buddhist sect in Tibet around 787. His Chinese name was Jakugo. He is said to have expressed the views of the Yogacara Madhyamaka school. He came to Tibet at the invitation of King Trisong Detsen, who decided to fully introduce Buddhism in 761, but returned to Nepal due to resistance from the Pon sect. He returned around 771 and, together with Padmasambhava, laid the cornerstone of the Samue Monastery in 775. In 779, when the main hall was completed, he invited Sarva monks from Nalanda, gave precepts to six monks, and founded a Buddhist sect. At the same time, he began teaching Sanskrit for the translation of sutras. He held a dedication ceremony for the Samue Monastery in 787 and is said to have predicted the upcoming Samue sect debate before his death. His views on the harmony of the two schools of thought and the Madhyamaka are explained in the Madhyamaka Sutra, and his wide-ranging knowledge is shown in the Outline of the Truth.
