thūpa (English spelling)

...A sacred structure that houses the remains of the Buddha. In Pali it is called thūpa, in China and Japan it is called sotoba, stupa, tower, or futo, and in Sri Lanka it is called dāgaba (a corruption of dhātugabbha, meaning a place where remains are kept). It is also sometimes considered synonymous with chaitya, which refers to an object of worship in general.
