1716‐88 The eldest son of Philip V and Isabella of the Farnese family (Philip V's fifth child). After the death of his half-brother Ferdinand VI, he was made King of Naples (reigned 1734-59) and became King of Spain (reigned 1759-88). He was an enlightened despot, promoting talented people and implementing numerous reforms. He was particularly notable for reforming the military (especially the navy), including the reorganization of military positions, and for public works, and many of the historical buildings in Madrid today were built during his time.
