The eldest son of King Philip II of Spain. His unfortunate life and mysterious death became material for anti-Spanish campaigns early on, and later became legendary and widely known through Schiller's play and Verdi's opera Don Carlos. Both of his parents were the grandsons of the Mad Queen Juana, and they were also cousins, so Carlos was born with physical and mental abnormalities. In addition, his mother died during childbirth, and his father was abroad, so he had little opportunity to meet him until he was 14 years old, and his grandfather, Carlos I, shunned him because of his abnormalities.

スペイン王フェリペ2世の長男。その不幸な生涯と謎に包まれた死は早くから反スペイン･キャンペーンの材料となり，その後シラーの戯曲とベルディの歌劇《ドン･カルロス》を通して伝説化され，広く知られるにいたった。両親がともに狂女王フアナの孫であり，かつ従兄妹同士で，カルロスは生来，肉体･精神ともに正常ではなかった。加えて母は出産時に死亡，父は外国にあって14歳になるまでほとんど会う機会がなく，また祖父カルロス1世からもその異常さゆえに忌避されていた。
