A city in central Kanagawa Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. It occupies the eastern foot of the Tanzawa Mountains and part of the Sagamihara Plateau. The city, which developed on the right bank of the Sagami River, flourished as a post town and market town in the early modern period and was an important location for shipping by boat. It is connected to Tokyo by the Odakyu Electric Railway Line, which opened in the early Showa period, and an interchange on the Tomei Expressway was completed in 1969, so there are many people commuting to Tokyo. It developed as an industrial city, with factories producing automobile parts, electronic equipment parts, general machinery, and more. 神奈川県中央部の市。1955年市制。丹沢山地東麓と相模原台地の一部を占める。相模川右岸に発達する市街は近世宿場町,市場町として栄え,舟運の要地であった。昭和初期に開通した小田急電鉄線により東京と結ばれ,1969年開通の東名高速道路のインターチェンジも完成,東京への通勤者が多い。工業都市として発展し,自動車部品,電子機器部品,一般機器などの工場がある。相模川に沿って圏央道が南北に通じる。93.84km2。22万4420人(2010)。
