Shiro - Shiro

A haiku poet from the late Edo period. His surname was Inoue. His real name was Masaharu. His first name was Shiro. His other names were Biwaen and Shujuso. He was born in Moriyama, Owari Province (Aichi Prefecture). He succeeded the Inoue family, a small doctor in Nagoya, and was highly regarded as an obstetrician. He studied Japanese classics under Motoori Norinaga, and was also skilled in Chinese classics, painting, and Heike kyoku. He studied haiku under Kyotai, and was highly regarded as the head of his school, well known among other schools, and was called one of the three great masters of the Kansei period, along with Michihiko of Edo and Gekkyo of Kyoto. He died on May 16, 1812. His haiku style was gentle, elegant, and clear, and he was particularly skilled in linked verse. His many works have been compiled into the "Biwaen Seven Collections," a total of five volumes. His collection of prose is "Biwaen Essays," and his collections of haiku are "Biwaen Haiku Collection" and "Biwaen Haiku Collection: Part 2."

江戸後期の俳人。姓は井上。本名正春。初号支朗。別号枇杷園(びわえん)、朱樹叟(しゅじゅそう)。尾張国(おわりのくに)(愛知県)守山生まれ。名古屋の町医者の井上家を継ぎ、産科医として評判が高かった。国学を本居宣長(もとおりのりなが)に学び、ほかにも漢学、絵画、平曲をよくした。俳諧(はいかい)は暁台(きょうたい)に学び、その門の筆頭として重んじられて、他派にもよく知られ、江戸の道彦(みちひこ)、京都の月居(げっきょ)と並んで寛政(かんせい)の三大家とよばれた。文化(ぶんか)9年5月16日没。俳風は温雅平明で、とくに連句を得意とした。数多い編著は『枇杷園七部集』全5編にまとめられている。文集に『枇杷園随筆』、句集に『枇杷園句集』『枇杷園句集後編』がある。
