Governor of Caria, Asia Minor under the Achaemenid Empire (377-353 BC). He maintained a de facto independent status and moved his governor's base from Mylasa to Halicarnassus. In 362 BC, he joined the anti-Persian revolt of other governors of Asia Minor, and in the Allied Wars between Athens and its allied poleis (357-355 BC), he assisted the rebel poleis and brought the islands of Rhodes and Kos into his sphere of influence. He loved the Greek arts and sciences, and planned to build a magnificent mausoleum for himself at Halicarnassus, the Mausoleion. After his death, his sister, Artemisia II (?-351 BC), who became his wife according to Carian custom, took over the construction of the Mausoleion and led it to completion. The ancients considered it one of the Seven Wonders of the World. [Shoji Kiyonaga] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
