Odera School

Japanese:
Odera School

A play by Mantaro Kubota. Four acts. It is an adaptation of his own novel "Tasogare" (later renamed "Kudureyana"). It was serialized in the January to April 1927 (Showa 2) issues of Josei. It premiered the following November at the Tsukiji Little Theater, directed by Sugisaku Aoyama, and starring Kyosuke Tomoda and Hiroshi Shiomi. The story is set in a substitute elementary school called Daiji School in Asakusa, Tokyo, at the end of the Meiji era. The old principal, Sanpei Daiji, lives in the old world he is familiar with. Sanpei clashes with a young teacher, Mine, over the child of "Uokichi," who he believes to be a relative, and Mine resigns. After the 20th anniversary ceremony, Sanpei is told by the old teacher Mitsunaga that "Uokichi" has sold land to the city and a public elementary school will be built on the site. This is a masterpiece of realistic drama that depicts, in an extremely refined style, the sorrow of humanity left behind by the flow of time.
