The story of Tokuzo Kuwanaya's boat trip

Japanese: 桑名屋徳蔵入船物語 - くわなやとくぞういりふねものがたり

Kabuki Kyogen. Historical piece. 5 acts. Written by Namiki Shozo. First performed at the Ogawa Kichitaro Theater in Osaka in December 1770 (Meiwa 7). This Kyogen play incorporates the story of the sailor Kuwanaya Tokuzo, who is said to have engaged in a dialogue with an o-nyūdō at sea and made him retreat, and the belief in Konpira, and is set in a family feud within the Sanuki Takamaru family. The plot is extremely complicated, but this is because both good and evil are scheming in a double-dealing manner. For example, Tokuzo and Sagami Goro are twins who are divided into friends and enemies, but in the fourth act Goro appears as a fake Tokuzo, and in the fifth act Tokuzo appears as a fake Goro.

歌舞伎狂言。時代物。5幕。並木正三作。1770年(明和7)12月大坂小川吉太郎座初演。海上で大入道と問答して退散させたという船乗り桑名屋徳蔵の話と金毘羅信仰を採り入れて，讃岐高丸家のお家騒動に仕組んだ狂言。筋立はたいそう複雑になっているが，それは善･悪双方がともに裏の裏を行くという策略をめぐらすためで，たとえば徳蔵と相模五郎は敵味方に分かれた双生児だが，4幕目では五郎が偽の徳蔵に，5幕目では徳蔵が偽の五郎になって現れたりする。
