編物のうち、棒針編と並ぶ手編みの一種類。1本の針から美しい編み地を無限につくりだすことができる。先がかぎ形になっている編み針に糸をかけて、引き出したループを1目ずつ編成しながら進み、編み地をつくる。鎖(くさり)編、細(こま)編、中長(ちゅうなが)編、長(なが)編などを組み合わせて模様をつくる。やさしくフェミニンなのは方眼編やネット編。松編は美しく暖かい。七宝(しっぽう)編やシェル編は春先の薄物に適している。また玉編はベビー物などにふさわしい。そのほか、編み目を交差させる交差模様、編み地の縁(ふち)回りなどに編み付けるピコット、凹凸感のあるパプコーンなど、技法も多彩である。

　かぎ針の素材は、竹、角(つの)、金属などがあるが、現在ではおもに金属が使われている。号数はかぎの部分の太さを示し、1/0～8/0号まであり、数字の多いほうが太く、糸の太さにあわせて使用する。
