Entente (English spelling)

Japanese: 協商 - きょうしょう（英語表記）entente

A diplomatic term derived from the French entente cordiale, meaning "close concord." H. Nicolson defines it as "a similarity of views and interests between certain nations, and an agreement of policy on certain issues, somewhere between an 'alliance' and a 'friendship,'" but it is generally used to describe a loose cooperative relationship between nations that is not based directly on a treaty, agreement, or arrangement. Sometimes it is used to refer to a cooperative relationship based on a treaty, but even in that case, it differs from an alliance in that the conditions for the obligation to assist are not clearly stated. Historically, it has referred to various cooperative relationships between Great Britain and France, but it is most often used to refer to the Anglo-French Entente.
