An ice horn is installed on the top of the rudder at the stern to protect the top of the rudder when astern, and many ships use a nozzle propeller with a cylindrical structure around the propeller to prevent ice from entering the propeller. The shape of the main hull is often round with inclined sides to effectively push the ice crushed at the bow outwards to reduce resistance and to mitigate the force of ice when trapped in an ice-filled area (called a besset). …
