Infant school (English spelling)

A British institution for early childhood education. Its origins date back to 1816, when R. Owen established a preparatory school that was part of the "Character Formation Institute" next to his factory. Its predecessor was a common playground for children. Its aim was to prevent the adverse effects on the physical and mental development of young children caused by the miserable lives of working families brought about by the Industrial Revolution. The Infant School Association, founded by S. Wilderspin in 1824, played a major role in popularizing it. It received government subsidies from 1940, and under the Education Act of 1876, it became a rare institution in the world that accepted children over the age of five for compulsory schooling.

イギリスの幼児教育機関。起源は1816年R.オーエンが自分の工場のそばにつくった〈性格形成学院〉の一部をなす予備学校。その前身は子どもの共同遊び場。産業革命によってひきおこされた労働者家族の悲惨な生活が幼児の心身の発達に及ぼす悪影響を防止することを意図した。1824年ウィルダースピンS.Wilderspinが結成したインファント･スクール協会が，その普及に果たした役割は大きい。40年から国庫補助金を受け，76年教育法により世界にまれな5歳児以上の義務就学の受入機関となった。
