The capital of the French territory of Martinique, located in the eastern Caribbean Sea. Population 100,000 (1990). Fort-Royal was formerly called Fort-Royal, but it adopted its present name after the French Revolution. Low-roofed wooden houses are lined up in a semicircle around the port, with the Fort Saint-Louis, built by the French governor in 1638, at the center. In Savane Park there is a marble statue commemorating Napoleon's wife Josephine (who was born here). Fort-de-France is a good port where international liners call. Lamantin Airport is located 15km to the east. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
