Kiyoshi Muto

Architectural structural scientist. Born in Toride, Ibaraki Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Imperial University in 1925 (Taisho 14). Became an assistant professor at the same university in 1927 (Showa 2), and a professor in 1935. After retiring from government in 1988, he became vice president of Kajima Construction and also opened the Muto Structural Mechanics Research Institute. A leading figure in earthquake-resistant engineering, he developed computer simulation methods and established the theory of flexible structures. He was responsible for the structural design of Japan's first skyscraper, the Kasumigaseki Building (1968). He received the Imperial Prize of the Academy in 1964 for his "research into earthquake-resistant structures," and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1983.

建築構造学者。茨城県取手(とりで)生まれ。1925年（大正14）東京帝国大学建築学科卒業。27年（昭和2）同校助教授、35年教授。63年の退官後は鹿島(かじま)建設副社長に就任、また武藤構造力学研究所を開設した。耐震工学の第一人者で、コンピュータによるシミュレーション法の開発を進め、柔構造理論を確立。日本最初の超高層ビル霞(かすみ)が関(せき)ビル（1968）の構造設計を担当。「耐震構造に関する研究」で64年学士院恩賜賞を受賞。83年文化勲章受章。
