Nobumitsu Kurihara
Year of death: October 28, 1870 (November 21, 1870)
Year of birth: July 20, 1794 (August 15, 1794)
A former family member of the late Edo period. Childhood name: Yotaro. Character: Hakunin. Commonly known as Magonojo. Pen name: Ryuan. As he was a member of the Kai Genji clan, he took the surname Takeda in his later years. Through his father Kazutsune, who served as Oku no Uhitsu (Second Lady of the Palace) in the Edo Shogunate, he learned Japanese classics from his father's colleague Yashiro Hirokata and Hirokata's acquaintance Hirata Atsutane, and Confucianism from Shibano Kuriyama. From an early age, he was allowed to browse the vast collection of books in Hirokata's Shinobazu Bunko library, and after coming of age, he participated in the research for the Kokin Yoran, which Hirokata compiled by order of the Shogunate, and was blessed with an environment in which he could gain a wide range of knowledge. He traveled around the country to visit materials and interact with various families in his research, and aimed to learn to understand cultural artifacts by seeing them for himself. Later, when Hirokata died of illness, the production of the Kokin Yoran was halted, and he published the accumulated knowledge up to that point in the form of his own work. His works on arms and horse equipment, such as "Armor Diagrams," "Sword Diagrams," "Arrow Diagrams," "Weapon Sleeve Mirrors," "Military Records," and "Sword Accessories Notes," were highly valued as educational books for samurai at the end of the Edo period.
