An old town in Ono County, southeastern Oita Prefecture. Notsu City, the town's center, is located at the intersection of the Hyuga Highway and the Usuki-Mie Highway, and developed as a market town from the Middle Ages. In the late 16th century, it was also a base for Bungo Christians. The town cultivates rice, tobacco leaves, and vegetables, and also engages in livestock farming and forestry. The Furen Cave (a natural monument) is located upstream of the Notsu River. It was incorporated into Usuki City in January 2005. Area: 139.19 km2 . Population: 9,916 (2003). 大分県南東部,大野郡の旧町。中心の野津市(のついち)は日向(ひゅうが)街道と臼杵・三重街道の交点にあたり中世から市場町として発達,16世紀後半には豊後(ぶんご)キリシタンの拠点でもあった。米作,葉タバコ・野菜栽培を行い,畜産,林業も営む。野津川上流に風連鍾乳洞(天然記念物)がある。2005年1月臼杵市へ編入。139.19km2。9916人(2003)。
