Born: May 1, 1825 in Lausanne [Died] March 12, 1898. Swiss mathematician and physicist. A lifelong teacher in Basel, he also taught geometry at the University of Basel (1865-1890). In 1884, he discovered a regularity in the spectrum of the hydrogen atom, now known as the Balmer series. The mechanism behind this simple regularity was elucidated by quantum mechanics, which was developed in the early 20th century.
