A state in the southern United States, on the Gulf of Mexico. Abbreviated as La. or LA. It occupies a low-lying alluvial plain on the west bank of the Mississippi River, and the northern plateau is heavily forested. The main agricultural products are soybeans, corn, sweet potatoes, and cotton. Beef and dairy cattle are also important. The state is rich in minerals such as oil, natural gas, and sulfur, and industries such as food processing, paper, pulp, and chemicals are thriving. It also has a large oyster catch. After being a French territory, a Spanish territory, and a French territory, it became a US territory in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. Discrimination against blacks remained deeply rooted even after the Civil War, and racial issues became serious in the 1960s. It joined the Union in 1812. The state capital is Baton Rouge. The largest city is New Orleans. It has an area of 111,898 ^km2 . It has a population of 4,649,676 (2014).
