…His family was a farmer and merchant, but his grandfather was a teacher of the Kanze school of Noh and his father was a master of saibun. At the age of 11, he aspired to become a sekkyobushi performer and moved to Tokyo to study under Satsuma Tatsudayu, a sekkyo saibun performer. His natural talent and training combined to make him a master, and he became the 16th head of the school. In 1902, he founded the Wakamatsu school, calling it Kairyo Sekkyobushi, by adding lyrics and music from Gidayu-bushi, Shinnai-bushi, and kosaku, and he changed his name to Wakamatsu Wakadayu, becoming the first head of the school.
