…His family was a farmer and merchant, but his grandfather was a teacher of the Kanze school of Noh and his father was a master of saibun. At the age of 11, he aspired to become a sekkyobushi performer and moved to Tokyo to study under Satsuma Tatsudayu, a sekkyo saibun performer. His natural talent and training combined to make him a master, and he became the 16th head of the school. In 1902, he founded the Wakamatsu school, calling it Kairyo Sekkyobushi, by adding lyrics and music from Gidayu-bushi, Shinnai-bushi, and kosaku, and he changed his name to Wakamatsu Wakadayu, becoming the first head of the school. In a 2008 concert, he manipulated puppets and gained popularity for his beautiful voice, vocal range, dynamic and delicate style of storytelling, and elegant style that was beyond the commonplace, and his name became public. …
